애덤스미스는 보이지않는 손을 제안하던 시기는 무역에 대한 과도한 규제가 지배적이던 시절이었다.

비합리적인 규제들)

독점은 정부가 돈을 벌기 위해서 만들어졌고, 규제는 추가부담금을 쉬이낼 수 있는 구조로 만들어짐. 규제는 영향력 있는 상인들의 요청으로 인해서 만들어짐. "경쟁"이라는 요소는 그 가운데서 배제되었음.

그렇다면 그런 상황에서 애덤스미스는 그것들을 어떻게 다뤄야 한다고 생각했을까?

(애덤스미스가 살던 시대에 대한 관점) => 사실 애덤스미스는 굉장히 성실한 학자류 인간, 애덤스미스가 과거의 사상에 대한 영향을 전혀 받지 않은 것은 아님.(허치슨으로부터 직접적인 영향을 받았고, 맨더빌의 경우 Self interest에 대한 인튜이션을 제공하였음.) 추가로 중상- 중농주의자들이나 혹은 제임스 스튜어트를 제외한 스코틀랜드 경제학자들은 Self interest에 대한 비슷한 생각을 공유하였음. 

애덤스미스의 논의를 따라가기 위해서는 그리스까지 거슬러 올라가야함. 그 당시에도 경제분석이라는 것을 했으니까.

그리스에서는 Self-Interest가 National Interest와 상충된다고 생각했음 .- 개인의 사익을 추구하는 것이 공익에 문제가 된다고 밝힘

그리스인들은 경제를 사회 시스템의 일부라고 생각했음. 

그 이후 상업적 진출이 활발해졌고 교역이 활발하게 일어남. 마이다스가 그랬던것처럼,파이낸스 이익을 추구하면 불안정하게 된다고 생각했음. 그들은 경제적 성장보다는 => "The good Life"를 추구하였음. 정부의 역할은 이것을 돕는 것.  - 정의의 지배

플라톤과 아리스토텔레스는, 물질적인 Self-interest를 깊게 의심했음. Self interest의 추구는 결과적으로 안 좋은 결과를 낳게 될 것이라 봄. - 상업활동의 제약이 필요하다고 보았았음.
